Albemarle Sound, located in the extreme northeastern corner of North Carolina, is a land filled with meandering waterways, picturesque small towns and a distinct and very visible connection to America’s colonial history. With settlements that can be traced back to the late 1600’s, the areas around the towns of Edenton, ElizabethCity and Hertford literally pulsate with a sense of tradition and heritage. And unlike some historical sites which are merely reconstructions of a storied past, here the homes and buildings are actually the restored originals, rather than reconstructions.
Edenton, which bills itself as the South’s prettiest small town, has more than 25 homes and public buildings which have been carefully preserved and designated as historic sites. Many of these can be seen by clicking on Virtual Edenton Tour in the menu on this page. Fast-paced residential development has not yet reached this area, and most new residents moving into the communities around the Albemarle Sound have largely been attracted by the slower pace of living and the access to boating and fishing activity.
Located two and a half hours from Raleigh and four hours from Washington, D.C., the Sound is a popular weekend getaway for boaters, many of whom end up purchasing vacation or retirement homes here.
Fronting the majestic Currituck Sound on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Waterside Villages is a new community for active adults, 55 and better. The Villages offer affordable, low maintenance homes and condominiums just fifteen minutes from the Outer Banks.
